In mid-June Casablanca, Morocco's most populated city became center of the SAMBO life. In Spanish, Morocco means "a white city". It is situated on the Atlantic coast, its main attraction being the Great Hassan II Mosque with the world's tallest minaret.
The SAMBO life in Casablanca started with a coaches' seminar, to be followed with inspection of the preparation for the SAMBO Masters World Championship to be held in Morocco in late October this year. The SAMBO week finished with official events, the highlight being the Congress of the African Confederation of SAMBO.
FIAS was represented in Casablanca by Executive Director Mr. Sergey Tabakov who spent the whole week coordinating, consulting, inspecting and simply helping SAMBO representatives of Casablanca and Africa on the whole. Seven countries had sent their delegates to Morocco: Algeria, Cameroon, Congo, Mauritius, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia.
The best world's SAMBO has today - theory and practice, study and improvement methods for SAMBO techniques, physical conditioning and other aspects - Sergey Tabakov rendered bit by bit every day to the African SAMBO community.
Upon the seminar completion, all participants were awarded certificates as well as received priceless expertise, knowledge and skills that would be very useful for further development of SAMBO in their home places.
Inspections with representatives of the Organizing Committee for the upcoming World Championship for SAMBO Masters are a new practice recently introduced in the FIAS. Such visits help disclose strong and weak points of the approaching event, assess potential problems solutions, and pinpoint areas requiring financial or methodological assistance to the Organizing Committee.
The Organizing Committee had decided on the facility to hold the Championship events - in October the masters will compete in the King Mohammed V Multipurpose Sports Center. This king was the most popular sultan and king in the history of Morocco. Back in 1987, this facility hosted a SAMBO World Cup. The complex is by no means ultramodern yet offers all premises and equipment required for holding such events.
The World Championship participants and guests will be accommodated in comfortable hotels Swiss, Azur and Le Littoral on the Atlantic coast. It will take the athletes 15-20 minutes by bus to the King Mohammed V Sports Center. The Championship organizers promised to ensure provision of comfortable buses with balanced timetables, for all guests in Morocco to feel welcome.
The entertainment program would take a significant part of the SAMBO masters' visit to Casablanca. All guests will be able to see the old part of the town - the Medina, where the Arabic town color still exists: narrow twisting alleys, donkeys pulling carts, tiny shops with outside goods displays. By balancing the cultural and sports agendas within the Championship, the organizers wish to make the visit to Casablanca memorable for all participants and guests of the upcoming event.
In the end of the week a Congress of the African Confederation of SAMBO was held. The issues addressed focused on the SAMBO development in the African continent. Apart from those, the agenda included a report by Dalil Scally, Confederation President proposing comments and additions to the FIAS Statute and a presentation of the FIAS new logo by the FIAS Executive Director Sergey Tabakov.
"All events were well organized. We witnessed the enthusiasm and desire of the African specialists to promote SAMBO. While in Morocco, I was asked many questions and discussed many issues, we also received quite a few interesting suggestions on the African National Federations organizing sports and educational events. I'm sure this shows the people's true desire to develop and promote SAMBO in Africa. That is great, because, in my opinion, only true devotion brings along productive work and good results. The results we all strive to achieve", FIAS Executive Director Mr. Sergey Tabakov commented summarizing his visit to Morocco.
